Curriculum

CharlotteLaw students are exposed to skills and values of the profession from the first day of matriculation and then throughout the remaining years of their legal study. Commencing Fall 2010, all students will begin their law school career with JumpStart – an intensive multi-day orientation where students are introduced to the study and practice of law. Through our infusion curriculum, students are introduced to lawyering skills and values in many of their courses, including a number of traditional “doctrinal” courses. Students learn to research, analyze, write, and orally present issues as lawyers do in practice as part of the six (6) hour first year Lawerying Process curriculum. Our flexible advanced writing requirement offers students a choice of courses and options where they can sharpen their research, analytical and writing skills. CharlotteLaw’s upper-division curriculum includes a wide-range of doctrinal and skills courses, seminars, clinical offerings, and externships, providing students with opportunities to explore specific interests and enhance their readiness for practice. Finally, as lawyers-in-training, all students provide pro bono service to underserved populations.

New to our curriculum is the innovative Passport to Effective Practice Program [PEP], designed to ensure that every student is exposed to critical lawyering skills and values not otherwise found in the curriculum. Over the span of the first year, students in the entering 2010 class will take a one-credit course that offers a variety of workshops, visiting speakers and practice-related events. In future years, these students will continue to participate in the PEP curriculum as they advance in their studies. Current upper-level students were exposed to the PEP curriculum vis-a-vi a one-day intensive program offered in Fall 2010.

Mandatory Course Sequence for Part-Time Evening Students

Students enrolled in the part-time evening program must follow the required sequence of courses for the entire first academic year. Thereafter, it is strongly recommended that part-time evening students continue to follow the program course sequence and refrain from adding any elective courses until after the completion of their second academic year. Approval to take elective courses before completion of the 2nd year requires approval by the Associate Dean for Academics.
