Legal Writing & Research Program
The Lawyering Process Program at the Charlotte School of Law introduces students to theoretical and ethical considerations of lawyering, to the creative problem solving skills necessary for effective advocacy, and to the practical application of the rule of law in varying practice settings. The program is committed to teaching students how to conduct in-depth legal research, in both electronic and paper formats; how to understand and process legal authority; and how to organize and communicate that understanding in well-reasoned and well-written legal documents.
The Lawyering Process Program emphasizes professionalism and promotes practice-readiness by facilitating each student's development of critical research and analytical skills, excellent oral and written communication abilities for legal and non-legal settings, and skills essential for the preparation of objective and persuasive legal documents. In addition, the program supports success in other law school classes by teaching the foundational skills of case briefing, rule synthesis, and well-reasoned legal analysis. Students who complete the program successfully will have demonstrated that they possess oral and written communication skills that result in logical organization, conciseness and preciseness, and appropriate depth of rule and fact analysis. The program also introduces students to the lawyering process skills involved in interviewing, counseling, and negotiation.
